Day 3 – Anuradhapura -  A magnificent classical city

Of all the magnificent early cities and capitals that Sri Lanka boasted, Anuradhapura was the finest and most renowned. At a time when European culture was still in its infancy, here was a classical city in which flourished the arts, the humanities, hydraulic technology and, of course, Buddhism. This was no ephemeral civilization either, for it endured some 1,400 years. Anuradhapura is also the archeological city in Sri Lanka that is listed as a world Heritage site by USESCO.

In brief we will be visiting the following:Sri Maha Bodhi - Small tree with limbs so slender that they must be supported on iron crutches, is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world (2,200 years).LohaPrasada - A roof of copper over a primordial skyscraper, this work of DutthaGamini is known to have burned down only 15 years after its building; which leads to the surmise that it was largely a wooden structure. The Mahathupa - RuwanweliDagaba - The most important Monastery of the city.
