After breakfast, we leave to Hikkaduwa for our overnight stay, en-route visiting Galle. During the Dutch occupation of the island, a magnificent Fort was built in Galle.  We reach Galle and visit the GALLE DUTCH FORTRESS, and have a look at the oldest Protestant church in the country called the ‘Groote Kirk’ built by the Dutch which is located inside the Fort. En route to Galle however, we also visit a Turtle Hatchery at Kosgoda and a Mask Museum at Ambalangoda.

Turtle Hatchery Projects have been launched to conserve the population of turtles that are reaching extinction (turtle meat is widely sold and eaten in Sri Lanka) and such projects are found along the southern coast of Sri Lanka where turtles come to lay their eggs.

The Mask Museum at Ambalangoda is a glimpse into the tradition of arts and crafts of Sri Lanka. All masks are hand carved with intricate designs and painted in vibrant shades, depicting traditions that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Moon Stone Mine Meetiyagoda. Sri Lanka is famous for its precious gems and moonstone. Meetiyagoda is one of the few places where they are found in such high concentrations. It is believed by the villagers that this piece of land, around an acre in extent, is blessed by the moon. The moonstone is grey and feels cool and smooth to the touch when polished and has a glow like that of the moon.

You climb up steps to the top of a platform approximately three metres high. Your ride is then led to the side of the platform where you step into the howdah and position yourself, usually two on either side.
